What Is In The Back Wheel’s Axle Of A Bicycle That Makes It Stop The Bike When The Rider Pedals Backwards?

I cant take apart the wheel because I guess I dont have the tools to do so. I want to take out this feature of the bike so I can turn it into a unicycle. if anyone has any good websites it would certainly be appreciated.

that depends on if its a drum brake, coaster brake or fixed gear. If it’s like drum or coaster brake then it’s no good for unicycle. If it’s a fixed gear hub then what makes it stop is the cog is in a fixed place, meaning when you pedal forward it moves forward and you can pedal backwards to go backwards. That is what’s needed for converting to a unicycle. If its a fixed gear hub then you don’t need to take it apart. You just need to unlace the spokes out and voila, a hub to use for a unicycle.
Doesn’t anyone know how a coaster brake works??
In the coaster brake hub there are 2 “shoes” which, when pushing either way (to go forward OR to brake) press against the hub shell. A worm gear attached to the rear cog forces the shoes against the shell.
To answer your question, there is nothing to change or remove inside the hub unless you don’t want it to work at all. However, if you would remove the fulcrum arm- that arm on the outside of the wheel- you’d be able to pedal forwards and backwards but this is EXTREMELY dangerous.
Why don’t you just buy a unicycle, by the time you figure that you are wasting your time with a bicycle wheel you could be riding.
A pair of brake shoes that work against the inside of the wheel hub…..
a unicycle type wheel is direct drive, and uses a different type of hub…..
its called a drum brake, they are very difficult to take apart, so i recommend just getting a different wheel
drum brake but i wouldnt mess with it
You should go to a big city and to a street show u would make Hella money
All the answers are good but left out one important thing- buy a pump with a built in pressure gauge. It's important to use the right pressure and you need a gauge to do that. In US, <$20.

Okay, here is the situation. I spun out on snow the other day and hit a curb. I filed a claim and took it into a body shop for a quote. Here is…
Buffalo today unveiled the first-even four-port USB 3.0 hub. Right now? May not be that useful. But sooner than you think, this is going to be the multi-port hub that you need.
USB 3.0 has already started working its way onto PCs, and it won’t be long before it’s become the new standard. As well it should: Buffalo’s BSH4A03U3 hub is backwards compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0, but offers data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps.
The 4-port USB 3.0 hub will be available in Japan later next month, AC adapter included, for $88. There’s no word yet on when it might be available stateside, but the clock’s ticking. [Buffalo via CrunchGear]

The desktop version will backup whatever files you ask it to backup. It will also backup your system settings, so that you can return your system to its previous feel. However, you would still have to reinstall Windows from CD or a vendor restore disc before you can restore everything. If you are running XP, you can choose the Wizard's defaults to backup everything, or choose the Backup tab to be selective. If you choose the Backup tab, be sure to select "System Files".
A bicyclist who died in downtown Sacramento when his bicycle was caught underneath a Regional Transit bus has been identified as 46-year-old William Detore, Sacramento County Coroner’s officials said today.
Sgt. Norm Leong, police spokesman, said that based on witnesses at the crash site, “at this time it doesn’t appear there was any fault on the part of the (bus) driver.”
But Leong added the investigation is continuing and that no final determination has been made.

If you’re a photographer and use a Mac, chances are you’re using Lightroom or Aperture. Probably Lightroom, since Aperture is less popular among pros — and the latest version seems to be an acknowledgment of that. The features added in version 3 are clearly intended to draw casual shooters using iPhoto to the paid image editing honey pot. Since so many of these amazing new features are direct side-loads from iPhoto, it smooths the process and makes the program as a whole more approachable, though whether existing Aperture users will find them helpful is questionable. Brushes, on the other hand, are a welcome addition to any photographer’s toolset, and depending on how dedicated you are, may be worth the price of admission.
